Chakra Series: Crown Chakra

The crown keeps us united with our light, not the physical light of the earth, but the light of our true spiritual selves, to the light of our friends and home, to our soul. Without this link we would feel “disconnected,” or, as Robert Assaglioni, the founder of psychotherapy, called it, we would experience, “Divine Homesickness.”

A lotus blossom in varying stages of growth represents each chakra as it expands its awareness and opens to greater consciousness. Beginning life in the mud, the lotus fights to reach the light and achieve its ultimate prize, to bask in the radiance of the heavens. Sahasrara meaning “Thousand petal lotus,” or ,“The Shining Void,” connects us with the will to be. When its spiritual link is weak or when its energy is opposed we can lose the will to live, a symptom often aligned with depression.

Many religions require their followers to cover their heads, revealing their understanding of the power and sacredness of this center. Just as the root chakra is the cord that keeps us earthed the crown is our thread to heaven, keeping our lines of communication open so that we may be guided on our path. We are “the temple,” heaven and earth resides within us provided each chakra is free from obstacles. Without this relationship we are lost on the sea of unconsciousness. We forget why we came, who we are, our purpose and reason for being.

When the crown is stimulated it feels as if a thousand warm fingers are massaging it. When it is happy and balanced it feels as if the whole world resonates within it, with you. You “know” more than you “think.” You become aware that everything around you is an aspect of you, a reflection of you, joined by the light resonating within your crown, linking with the souls and the lights of others animate and inanimate.

The word soul comes from the French word “Sol” meaning sun. Your soul is the sunlight within you.

Let Your Light Shine!

Ways to play with the energy of your crown chakra:

• The crown is violet when resting and when activated it shines with a white and violet tint. Wear these colors to stimulate the energy.
• On a similar note you can wear amethyst or clear quartz crystal to assist the crown or look through an amethyst or a crystal ball.
• Meditate to connect with your higher self through the crown chakra.
• Meditate to connect with your soul. Imagine you are floating up through this chakra on steps of pure white light. At the top of the stairway is your soul waiting with open arms to greet you. Spend some time with your soul and make an intention to understand your purpose during this lifetime and why you chose to take this journey in your current guise.
• Close your eyes and breath into this chakra. Take your consciousness to the center on your in breath and imagine the energy expanding outward on the out breathe.
• There are numerous yoga asanas that will assist you with stimulating the crown. The head stand and mountain pose will help.
• Try a Mudra. These are special hand positions or finger meditations. This one has the power to send energy to your crown: Put your hand in prayer position in front of your solar plexus. Allow your ring fingers to point upward, touching at the top, and cross the rest of your fingers with the left thumb beneath the right. Close your eyes and focus on your crown chakra as you breath in and out easily and effortlessly. Keep this position for about 5 minutes.
• While performing your Mudra you can chant a sound directly related with the crown. This would be AH or AUM or NG. These sounds are from the Sanskrit letters. When chanted, they cause a resonance in your body.
• Try an Indian Head Massage to stimulate the energy physically.
• Try sitting in the sun and connecting with the soul of the sun. Ask it to bring more light into your crown.
• Before you sleep imagine your crown opening up and see yourself floating through it, up into the universe above this world. Re-connect with the soul of the earth from this vantage point and ask what you can do to keep this connection alive in your human form.
• Join the light within your crown with the light resonating from other beings, human, animals, creatures, inanimate objects, etc. Become one with all life!
